I think that claim is somewhat misleading. Christmas in China has long been de-religiousized and functions more as a point for consumption and social interaction.

It’s precisely this gap between name and reality that makes some people wary, especially as it touches on historical memories of cultural security.

But if we always interpret exchange as confrontation, aren’t we underestimating the Chinese culture’s ability to absorb and transform?

Cultural confidence has never been built through resistance, but through choice and creation—something repeatedly proven in Chinese history.

Sometimes resistance looks more like dissatisfaction with consumerism, yet it gets packaged as a cultural stance.

The internet further amplifies these emotions, making minority voices seem overwhelmingly loud.

Perhaps when society no longer obsesses over whether to celebrate Christmas, that’s when we’ve truly become at ease.
