A discussion from the perspective of an international student about what aspects of Chinese culture Vietnamese people are truly interested in and why.
Xiaopan, we're preparing cultural promotion content for Vietnam. In your opinion, what aspects of Chinese culture interest Vietnamese people the most?
Many people would say history and food, but it's actually more than that. For example, Chinese character culture is very special to us.
Chinese characters? Doesn't Vietnam no longer use Chinese characters nowadays?
That's right. We mainly use the Vietnamese alphabet now. But many historical documents and inscriptions from the past were written in Chinese characters or related scripts. If you study history and know Chinese, you can read the original texts.
So language and history are closely connected.
Yes. And we're also very interested in how China is developing today, such as urban life and the way young people work. These are very practical topics.
So it's not just about looking at the past, but also about understanding the present.
Exactly. Another important point is that our two countries share many cultural habits, such as celebrating festivals and respecting family, but there are also differences. People like to compare them and think about why they are different.
Hearing you say that, it seems that when we do cultural promotion, we need to explain the background and also encourage comparison and reflection.
That's what I think too. If we only introduce tourist attractions or food names, people will quickly forget them. But if we explain how they relate to Vietnam, people will be much more interested.
