Yesterday I watched the new Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf with my nephew. When Meiyangyang fell from a height, her first reaction was actually to hold down her skirt. I thought that was a little strange.

I saw people discussing it online too. Some think it’s not just about her covering her skirt. There are also several shots filmed from below, so they suspect the production team was deliberately trying to attract attention.

But isn’t this a cartoon for children? And during a fight, she should be protecting herself first. Constantly worrying about whether her skirt might expose her feels out of place in that situation.

Some people argue that Meiyangyang has always cared a lot about looking pretty, so holding down her skirt fits her personality and can also teach children to protect their privacy.

If it had happened only once, I probably wouldn’t have thought much of it either. The problem is that both the action and the camera angle appear repeatedly, so naturally adults may feel uncomfortable watching it.

Right. Every shot in an animation is deliberately designed by the creators. There are actually many other choices for how to draw the skirt and what angle to use.

It’s not that I think girls in cartoons shouldn’t wear skirts. I just think children’s works should be more careful about how they present things and not suddenly make a brave character seem focused only on whether she might be exposed.

When we watch cartoons with children in the future, we probably shouldn’t only pay attention to whether the story is funny. It’s also worth thinking about whether certain shots are appropriate and what kind of impression they may leave on children.
